NUCLEAR KEYCARDS

HOW TO GET NUCLEAR KEYCARDS IN FALLOUT 76

Nuclear Keycards are required whenever you want to launch a nuke in Fallout 76. The most reliable method is to use the Surveillance System Terminal inside the Whitespring Bunker, track a Nuclear Keycard Cargobot, shoot it down, and loot the card from its Secure Transport Container.

Quick answer: enter the Whitespring Bunker, use the Surveillance System Terminal in the command center, select Nuclear Keycard Escort, follow the map marker, destroy the Cargobot, and collect the Nuclear Keycard from the dropped container.

REQUIRED FOR NUKE LAUNCH

You need a Nuclear Keycard before the final launch code step.

BEST SOURCE CARGOBOT

Track and destroy a Nuclear Keycard Cargobot convoy.

BRING EXTRA SPARE CARD

An incorrect launch code can waste the card.

WHAT IS A NUCLEAR KEYCARD?

A Nuclear Keycard is a single-use item needed at the end of a nuclear missile silo run. After completing the silo objectives, you insert the keycard into the launch system before entering the current launch code.

Nuclear Keycards are separate from the weekly Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie launch codes. You need both the physical keycard and the correct current silo code to launch.

  • Nuclear Keycard: The physical item consumed by the launch console.
  • Launch code: The eight-digit weekly code assigned to Alpha, Bravo, or Charlie.
  • Best practice: Carry at least one spare card before your first launch.

REQUIREMENTS BEFORE TRACKING A KEYCARD

The standard tracking method uses the Whitespring Bunker and is tied to Enclave progression. Players can encounter Cargobot convoys while exploring, but the bunker terminal is faster because it gives you a target marker.

  • Gain access to the Whitespring Bunker.
  • Progress far enough through the Enclave path to use the command center.
  • Use the Surveillance System Terminal to start a Nuclear Keycard escort search.
  • Bring a ranged weapon and enough ammunition for an airborne target.

HOW TO GET A NUCLEAR KEYCARD

01

Go to the Whitespring Bunker

Travel to the Whitespring Bunker and enter through an entrance available to Enclave members. Proceed to the command center and look for the Surveillance System Terminal.

02

Start a Nuclear Keycard escort search

Use the terminal and select Nuclear Keycard Escort. This starts or updates the repeatable tracking objective and places a search marker on your map.

Do not choose a silo code-piece search if your goal is a Nuclear Keycard. Code-piece searches send you after officers, not the Cargobot keycard convoy.
03

Follow the moving Cargobot marker

Open the map, locate the quest marker, and fast travel near the moving convoy. Look for a large Cargobot carrying a container, usually with Vertibot escorts nearby.

04

Shoot down the Cargobot

Focus on the larger Cargobot rather than the escorts. Long-range automatic rifles, heavy weapons, scoped rifles, laser weapons, and V.A.T.S. builds all work well.

05

Find the Secure Transport Container

When the Cargobot is destroyed, its Secure Transport Container falls to the ground. Watch where it lands, then follow the marker to the container.

06

Loot the Nuclear Keycard

Open the Secure Transport Container and take the Nuclear Keycard. Loot promptly and move away after collecting what you need.

BEST WEAPONS FOR SHOOTING DOWN A CARGOBOT

Range, sustained damage, and manageable recoil matter more than raw burst damage. Pure melee builds should carry a ranged backup weapon for this objective.

  • Automatic rifles: Strong for tracking a moving target while keeping pressure on it.
  • Heavy weapons: Large magazines make the fight easier when the Cargobot circles overhead.
  • Scoped rifles: Useful if you can keep distance and land consistent shots.
  • Energy weapons: Laser and plasma weapons can work well with the right build.
  • V.A.T.S. builds: Helpful when range and line of sight allow target locks.

TIPS FOR CATCHING THE CARGOBOT FASTER

  • Fast travel ahead of the moving marker instead of chasing from behind.
  • Fight from hills, rooftops, towers, or cliffs when possible.
  • Damage the engines or thrusters first if you can keep shots on target.
  • Use weapons with large magazines to avoid constant reloads.
  • Bring enough ammunition for the Cargobot and its escorts.
  • Watch the container fall so you do not lose it in trees, water, or uneven terrain.

WHAT IF THE CARGOBOT DISAPPEARS?

The convoy moves continuously and may leave the first search area before you arrive. If the target seems missing, check your map again and follow the updated marker.

  • The Cargobot may have moved beyond the original area.
  • Another player may have destroyed it first.
  • The container may have landed in trees, water, or difficult terrain.
  • The quest marker may need to be disabled and re-enabled in your Pip-Boy.
  • If the encounter bugs out, switch worlds and start a new search.

OTHER WAYS TO GET NUCLEAR KEYCARDS

Cargobots are the consistent in-game method, but keycards may also appear through temporary or player-driven sources. Treat these as bonuses rather than dependable farming methods.

  • Player vendors or direct trades.
  • Seasonal reward tracks.
  • Limited-time events, promotions, or community rewards.
  • Occasional Atomic Shop daily free items.

WHAT TO DO AFTER GETTING A NUCLEAR KEYCARD

  1. Check the current code for the silo you intend to use.
  2. Travel to Site Alpha, Site Bravo, or Site Charlie.
  3. Enter the silo and complete the security and launch-prep objectives.
  4. Insert your Nuclear Keycard.
  5. Enter the correct current code.
  6. Select your target and launch the nuke.

FAQ

Where do Nuclear Keycards spawn in Fallout 76?

They are carried in Secure Transport Containers beneath SAC Cargobots. The Cargobots travel around Appalachia rather than spawning at one permanent location.

How do I start the Nuclear Keycard quest?

Use the Surveillance System Terminal in the Whitespring Bunker command center and select Nuclear Keycard Escort.

Do I have to destroy the Vertibots?

Not necessarily. The Cargobot is the required target, although destroying the escorts can make the fight easier.

Is a Nuclear Keycard reusable?

No. A Nuclear Keycard is consumed by the silo launch system.

Can I buy a Nuclear Keycard from another player?

Yes. Players can trade keycards directly or sell spare keycards through vending machines.

Do Nuclear Keycards reset every week?

No. The weekly launch codes reset; the physical keycards do not.
